Steve started his musical career in the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines. During his 25 years of service, he travelled extensively throughout the world performing for Royalty and dignitaries. One of the highlights of his career in the Marines was being given the position of principal flautist on board HM Yacht Britannia during a Royal Tour of America and the Caribbean.
Since retiring from the Royal Marines, Steve has made a name for himself both as a conductor and music teacher in East Devon. He volunteered for the East Devon Music Centre and formed its Saxophone Choir before eventually taking over as Musical Director of the Concert Band. He conducted the Devon Youth Concert Orchestra for two years before being given the opportunity to become the Musical Director for the Devon Youth Wind Orchestra in 2006. Since 2009 he has also acted as Musical Director of the Exmouth Town Concert Band.
Assistant Musical Director
Alfie is an alumnus of DYWO, holding the principal bassoon chair until 2009. Since leaving, he has gained a first class degree in Music from Bath Spa University, with a specialism in composition. After graduating, Alfie moved back to Exeter, where he has worked as a freelance musician ever since. He is currently a teacher of piano, drums, and bassoon, and choirmaster of 3 Exeter choirs, including the Exeter Hospiscare Choir. He has won multiple awards for his compositions and his work for woodwind ensembles is published by Wonderful Winds.com. He is a well-respected Musical Director of theatre groups and an assistant conductor and principal percussionist of the Devon Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 2016 he has held the post of Assistant Director of Music for DYWO, and is also the percussion mentor.
