About Us

********************************

The Devon Youth Wind Orchestra (DYWO) is a symphonic wind orchestra designed for young musicians from across Devon. It welcomes intermediate and advanced brass, wind, and percussion players.

Under the of Steve Grant, DYWO provides a distinctive chance for members to enhance their musicianship and ensemble skills in a friendly and inviting atmosphere. Membership includes 8-10 Gathering Days (rehearsals) each year professional coaches, a weekend residential, multiple performance opportunities, and the chance to participate in biannual European tours.

Gathering Days

Gathering Days serve as our regular rehearsal sessions, taking place on Saturdays around eight times a year. We also host a residential weekend with specialised coaching staff. Our meetings occur at Exeter School or Withycombe Raleigh C of E Primary School in Exmouth from 10am to 4:15 pm, with regular breaks to socialise and make new friends.

During these days, we explore a diverse range of music that varies in difficulty and style. Our repertoire includes popular songs and film scores alongside some contemporary and feature works.

Steve (Musical Director and woodwind coach), Sam (Percussion coach), and Andy (Brass coach), along with other Committee members are present at each rehearsal to assist as needed.

Other Events

As a band member, you'll find numerous opportunities to perform at various venues throughout the year.

Christmas concerts are always a highlight featuring a mix of seasonal pieces and our regular repertoire. In the summer, we showcase our favourite pieces at  the Devon County Show at Westpoint and our annual concert in Exmouth.

Thanks to Steve's connections with the HM Royal Marine Band Service, we've been fortunate enough to work alongside the Band of HM Royal Marines on several occasions.

Each February, we hold a residential weekend where band members participate in sectional workshops, rehearsals and team-building activities. This weekend is a fantastic chance to forge new friendships and strengthen existing ones, while significantly enhancing individual musical skills.

Tours

Every other year, we organise a tour. Past destinations include France, Belgium, Spain, Italy.and Germany.

We are looking forward to July 2026 when we will be travelling to Belgium and are playing at the Last Post Ceremony under the Menin Gate.

We still have places available, so do get in touch if you would like further information.
